Using Chalk Paint to Create an Antique Finish on Furniture

I love chalk paint! It brings out my inner creative self and I find great pleasure in using it on everything from new or damaged furniture, to antique pieces you don’t recognize anymore! Applying it requires just one extra step than traditional painting techniques, which was great when recovering my trunks – no sanding down, primering or other steps were needed – I just used my homemade recipe of chalk paint!

Once the mixture has set, apply at least two to three coats to your furniture using white chalk paint – it dries quickly so no lengthy wait between each application is necessary!

Sand paper was then used to remove chalk paint from edges and spots where damage would occur over time, to give the furniture an aged appearance.

Don’t neglect sealing your furniture; otherwise the chalk paint could flake off with every touch! There are various sealers available, from wax to oil-based sealers; I chose Americana Paint Company top coat as it leaves the surface smooth once dried.

At last! My trunks look absolutely fabulous in my living room now. I hope that my tips for antiquing furniture have helped!
