Transformed Wooden Cable Spool: A Creative Repurposing Project

What should you do if you come across a wooden cable spool by the roadside? Beg your husband to stop the car and pick it up!! I am lucky enough to have an awesome husband who supports my DIY addiction. Once home I began brainstorming possibilities – my first thought being creating a rolling bookshelf.

At our local hardware store, we purchased wood stain, wood and steel wheels to start our project. After cutting shelves to fit snugly inside our spool we discovered that each shelf must be cut at different measurements due to being asymmetrical all around; so measuring and cutting took place until we achieved perfection – I ultimately settled for four shelves on my spool!

Attaching shelves required a lot of strength; thank goodness I had my husband as helper! For added sturdiness, use good glue. Finally, I stained the spool dark mahogany; this shade really brings warmth to any space!

Upholstery is one of my favorite activities! It is something I enjoy doing regularly, even though at times it may become frustrating. We decided to upholster the top of a wooden spool as its four large bolts made placing items difficult; so upholstering was our best solution. Fabric, batting and foam pieces were cut accordingly in order to cover its entirety.

Once everything was cut it was time to assemble our spool. First we stapled some batting to hold down the foam while fabric was stapled overtop of it all and stapled back onto the wooden base.

As something was still missing from their room, my kids now have a small bookshelf where they can sit and read. We decided that by adding decorative nails we could give it that final touch.
